Accessibility statement

Introduction

This website is run by North Somerset Council. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser settings
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen using browser settings
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader
  • you can skip to the main content when using a screen reader or keyboard

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

The My Computer My Way guide from AbilityNet is a step-by-step guide to help you make your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible is this website?

This website has been developed to be as accessible as possible. However, we know some parts of this website aren’t fully accessible:

  • some controls on pages – this may include links, buttons, and fields – do not show when they have been selected by the keyboard
  • some links are not distinct enough and may be difficult for people with moderate visual impairments to read
  • some content may be difficult to navigate using a screen reader
  • some tables do not have headers so people using a screen reader may find it difficult to recognise headings
  • some links do not have sufficient colour contrast
  • the ‘back to top’ button cannot be accessed using the keyboard
  • some elements disappear or get cut off at 200% and 400% zoom
  • zooming is disabled on mobile devices.
  • form elements do not have labels.

What to do if you can’t access parts of this website

If you need information on this website in a different format like accessible PDF, large print, easy read, audio recording or braille, please contact us using the contact details at the end of this statement.

We’ll consider your request and get back to you as soon as possible.

Compliance

The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standard.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

A few PDF documents published since September 2018 aren’t fully accessible to screen reader software and are essential to providing our services. These are being reviewed and will be accessible as soon as possible. Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

A full audit of the website will be carried out where the below issues will be resolved:

  • some controls on pages – this may include links, buttons, and fields – do not show when they have been selected by the keyboard
  • some links are not distinct enough and may be difficult for people with moderate visual impairments to read
  • some content may be difficult to navigate using a screen reader
  • some tables do not have headers so people using a screen reader may find it difficult to recognise headings
  • the colour of text and its background for the element is not sufficient
  • the ‘back to top’ button cannot be accessed using the keyboard
  • at 200% zoom, 400% zoom and in mobile view, the ‘Register’ text in the ‘Sign In/Register’ button in the header/hamburger menu is no longer available
  • at 200% zoom, 400% zoom and in mobile view, the ‘Did you find what you were looking for?’ and ‘Was this webpage helpful?’ text is partly cut off
  • the links in the footer, such as 'About us' and 'Terms and conditions', do not have sufficient colour contrast
  • the 'Back to top' button does not have sufficient colour contrast
  • at 200% and 400% zoom, the links in the hamburger menu, such as 'Families' and 'Contact Us', do not have sufficient colour contrast when receiving focus or hover

External links
